Digital Cleanup Day 2020
The end of the first Digital Cleanup Day in Ukraine. From our school, 143 participants in the educational process actively noted this event, and even with such a small number of participants, impressive results were achieved: 32432 messages, 60714 megabytes of data and 21186 emails were deleted.
According to research it was calculated that
1. If every person in France removed 50 emails, it would be tantamount to turning off 1.6 billion low-energy light bulbs for one hour, turning off the Eiffel Tower’s lights for 24 hours, or even the south consuming Paris electricity
2. 32.1 kW / h is consumed for storing 1 GB of e-mail per year, equivalent to baking ten hours with a regular household oven. According to the same study, email weighs an average of 230 kB (costing 7.4 watts per year). So if you delete 30 emails, you save 222Wh. This is the equivalent of a low-energy light bulb (9 watts) remaining per day (216 watts).
3. Every adult in the UK who sends one thank-you email a day saves over 16,000 tons of carbon per year – the same as 81,000 flights to Madrid or the removal of 2,200 diesel cars.
4. Using electricity for electronics in businesses and homes generates about 2% of the world’s total GHG emissions. By 2040, these emissions can account for up to 14% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.
5. Each spam email – even if we don’t open it – emits approximately 0.3g of CO2 into the atmosphere. The attachment email emits 50 grams.
Therefore, if you make simple calculations, just one day, the participants of the action from our school save as many mail messages that save more energy than 10 thousand light bulbs in one hour, or almost 157 thousand watts per hour per year. This has reduced at least 6 kg of CO2 emissions.
And what if every conscious citizen of Ukraine would take an active part in today’s event! Therefore, we urge all participants in the educational process more often, without waiting for the appropriate date, to arrange the Day of Digital Cleaning!
