History teacher (Sotulenko O.Yu.) took part in a conference devoted to Day of memory of the great Ukrainian philanthropist Yevhen Chykalenko. The event took place in the village Kononovka Drabiv area. The conference was attended by a grandson Harlamovych Yevhen – Yevhen I. Chykalenko that, despite advanced age, with great energy and enthusiasm spoke a lot about his famous grandfather. Delegates visited the museum and talked with students and teachers of local schools, exchanged views on activity and historical role of the famous Ukrainian public figure and philanthropist.

For information: In the early twentieth century, Yevhen Chykalenko Kononovka village had settled there and his estate. There was a famous philanthropist, a fighter for the preservation and development of the Ukrainian language and culture: his money issued “Russian-Ukrainian dictionary” Umantsiv-Komarov (Lviv, 1893-1898), he helped the magazine “Kievan antiquity” by giving award (1000 rubles) for written the best history of Ukraine and Ukrainian paying royalties for works of literature; organized at the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv Foundation. Mordovtsya to help Ukrainian writers, funded MSA weekly “farmer” in Lviv was the main founder of “Academic House” in Lviv (25 000 rubles) Dnepr encouraging young people to go to the studio in the city. From 1897 began publishing his work “Talks on Agriculture Improvement.” He was an active member of “Hromada” (1900), the total non-Party Democratic Organization, Ukrainian Democratic Party (since 1904), Ukrainian-Democratic Radical Party (since 1905); 1908 initiated the founding of the Society of Ukrainian progressives and his actual head.

He was concerned about the spread of national consciousness, founded only Ukrainian daily newspapers in Naddniprianshchyna – “Public Opinion” (1906) and “Council” (1906-1914).
